Syma X400 Mini Drone with Camera: A Beginner’s Dream or a Missed Opportunity?
The Syma X400 Mini Drone with Camera is a compact, feature-packed quadcopter designed for both adults and kids. With its 1080P HD camera, WiFi FPV (First Person View) capabilities, and user-friendly features like altitude hold, 3D flips, and one-key functions, this drone promises an exciting flying experience for beginners. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the details based on real customer experiences.
Pros and Cons: What Customers Are Saying
1. Quality and Build
The Syma X400 is praised for its sturdy build and durability. Many users, especially beginners, appreciate how well it holds up after minor crashes. The inclusion of rotor guards adds an extra layer of protection, making it ideal for indoor flights. However, some users noted that the drone feels lightweight, which can be a disadvantage in windy conditions.
Customer Feedback:
- "The drone is quite durable and has held up well after several crashes."
- "It's smaller and lighter, so I recommend flying in low to no winds."
2. Usability and Features
The Syma X400 shines in terms of usability. Features like headless mode, altitude hold, and one-key take-off/landing make it incredibly beginner-friendly. The remote control is straightforward, and the app adds extra functionality, such as flight path mode and gravity control. However, some users found the app setup confusing, particularly the need to connect to the drone’s WiFi before using the app.
Customer Feedback:
- "The one-key take-off, altitude mode, and headless modes are interesting settings to play with!"
- "The app(s) were confusing, but once connected, the controls are straightforward."
3. Camera and Video Quality
The 1080P HD camera is a standout feature, but opinions on its performance are mixed. While it provides a live view via WiFi and allows for real-time sharing, some users felt the video quality didn’t meet their expectations. For a $60 drone, the camera is decent but not high-end.
Customer Feedback:
- "The camera and video quality is on the low end. It’s functional but not high definition."
- "The 720P WiFi FPV Quadcopter has a decent camera for its size."
4. Battery Life and Flight Time
The drone comes with two modular batteries, which is a big plus. Each battery provides about 6 minutes of flight time, with a 90-minute charging time via USB. While the battery life is short, the inclusion of an extra battery allows for extended playtime.
Customer Feedback:
- "The drone can hold a charge for about 6 minutes of flying time, which seemed accurate."
- "The battery life is relatively short, but that’s to be expected with most drones of this size."
5. Performance and Fun Factor
The Syma X400 is fast, snappy, and fun to fly, especially for beginners. Its 360° flip and roll feature adds an extra layer of excitement. However, some users reported inconsistent performance, with the drone failing to follow controller inputs accurately.
Customer Feedback:
- "The X400 is snappy and fast! It’s smaller and lighter, so I recommend taking your first flight in low to no winds."
- "The Syma X400 is the only drone in my collection that fails to follow controller input consistently."
Conclusion: Is the Syma X400 Worth It?
The Syma X400 Mini Drone with Camera is a solid choice for beginners and kids looking to dip their toes into the world of drones. Its user-friendly features, durable build, and fun flight modes make it an excellent learning tool. However, the camera quality and battery life leave room for improvement, and some users experienced inconsistent performance.
Final Verdict: If you’re a beginner or buying a drone for a child, the Syma X400 is a great entry-level option. It’s affordable, easy to use, and packed with features that make flying enjoyable. However, if you’re looking for a more advanced drone with better camera quality and consistent performance, you might want to explore other options.

Comments from Amazon:
I own the X300 and X500 and thought I'd give this a go. Once you get into flying drones, it seems like each drone has it's own purpose and feel. The X300 is a great entry level and the x500 is more of a pro-consumer level drone with features you find on the much more expensive DJI Mavic2. The X400 is snappy and fast! It's smaller and lighter so I recommend taking your first flight in low to no winds so you an adjust the trim. That's the process where if the drone is not hovering still when you let go of the joysticks, you can make micro adjustments while in flight so it will hover. It's the first thing I do when I take off on any given day on any drone. The drone has a setting where you can fly it faster which I recommend for thrilling racing fun once you get used to the flight characteristics. The x400 also has a really fun single button barrel roll trick feature. So you can fly around and barrel roll like a veteran trick pilot. It's quite fun and impressive! The drone comes with an extra battery so you can charge one while you fly the other. I use a quick charger battery pack and rotate batteries and my other 2 Syma drones. I fly it within line of site since it's a bit smaller than the X500. I highly recommend taking this drone for a spin....quite literally. You won't be disappointed. Check out the video attached so you can get an idea of the speed of this drone. And I'm not even flying on the fastest setting
I recently purchased the Syma Mini Drone with a Camera for my kids, and it has been a great experience so far. The 720P Wifi FPV Quadcopter has a decent camera for its size, and it's very easy to control using the corresponding app. The drone is quite durable and has held up well after several crashes. One downside is that the battery life is relatively short, but that's to be expected with most drones of this size. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase and recommend this drone to anyone looking for an affordable and fun flying experience. Note: don't fly outside if it is a little windy.
I’m so Happy I bought this product! This was the ideal item for me. I'm a beginner with a drone. It was simple to use and even enjoyable! I enjoyed just playing with it without a camera, so having one was a bonus. It was the best quality and that was to be expected given that it's intended for beginners. The price is reasonable for the quality of the product. It has cool blinking lights and is fun to fly at night. Because it's smaller and lighter, I recommend taking your first flight in light to no winds so you can fine-tune the trim. If the drone is not hovering when you let go of the joysticks, you can make micro adjustments while in flight to get it to hover. I would strongly recommend this product and I 100% strongly believe it is well worth the price.
I'm a drone enthusiast and have a small collection of 12 drones of various sizes. Of all the drones in my collection, the Syma X400 is the only one that fails to follow controller input consistently. For me, the issue revealed itself right out of the box and made for a flight experience much worse than with any other drone I've flown. For beginners, there are many options in this price range and below that far exceed the performance of this model to include those made by trustworthy companies. I recommend to avoid purchasing this item at all costs, unless you have some other purpose in mind for the drone other than flying it.
The Syma X400 Drone is great for drone beginners. The box and packaging itself look great and the drone is plastered right on the front so that you know what you're getting when you purchase it. The package included 2 drone batteries (huge win!), an easy to understand remote, phone stand for that remote, charging cables, replacement rotors, rotor guards and of course an instruction manual. A quick read from the manual gave me the information I needed to get the drone off the ground straight from the box without needing to charge the batteries. I was able to fly it inside without causing any damage and only light bumping that the rotor guards had no problems with. I had to recalibrate some settings so that the drone wasn't moving while I was not moving it on the controller. The one key take off, altitude mode and headless modes are interesting settings to play with! The drone can hold a charge for about 6 minutes of flying time - which seemed accurate and had a charging time of 90 minutes via USB. This made it very convenient to basically be able to fly the drone whenever I wanted throughout the day and automatically landed when low. The camera and video quality is on the low end. It gives a live view to my phone via its own wifi which is great, but I am not sure if it hits the 720p as advertised and it is definitely not high definition. However, I expected this from a $60 drone as high quality camera equipment can cost thousands of dollars. The app(s) were confusing, you need to be connected to the drone via wifi and then turn on the app before being able to control or see anything. However once in the app the controls are straightforward and the camera interface is functional. All in all this x400 is a great beginner drone to LEARN with! If you want to get a feel for drone use before making a big purchase on something or teach an amateur how to fly one of these awesome pieces of technology then this is the one for you!
